HOW BREATHING RETRAINING WORKS

Science and Evidence Base

Breathing retraining is about restoring your 'everyday' way of breathing to physiologically optimal - learning to breathe (again) the way nature intended: silently, through the nose, gently, effortlessly, diaphragmatic, with a breathing volume that maintains the correct balance of blood gases.

The way:

  • a healthy newborn baby breathes

  • you may have breathed before you started snoring

  • how you may have breathed before anxiety became chronic

  • you likely may have breathed when you had no asthma symptoms

  • how a person in perfect health breathes, someone who breathes slowly, smoothly and silently, and does not snore, breathe erratically, get wheezy, breathless or panicky, or gulp air through the mouth, yawn or sigh a lot.

Breathing retraining based on the Buteyko Method is science and evidence based. Tess Graham trained in the Buteyko Breathing Method in 1993 and established a breathing clinic in Canberra in 1993.

Historic clinical data (1)  for those attending a comprehensive, breathing retraining program show:

  • 90% of participants report less blocked nose, coughing, wheezing, panic attacks, snoring, or waking up gasping by day 5*

  • 60% average reduction in total symptom score reported by day 5*

It is usual for people to find breathing through the nose is more comfortable within the first 24-hours and their sleep is more restful.

Tess was involved in the first clinical trial of the Buteyko Method for asthma (2) outside Russia.
The study conducted through the Mater Hospital in Brisbane, showed for the Buteyko group:

  • 71% median reduction in symptoms

  • 96% median reduction in daily β2‐agonist (bronchodilator) dose

  • 49% reduction in daily inhaled steroid use for the group taught the Buteyko Method.

  • correlation between the amount a person’s breathing volume reduced, and the reduction in the need for asthma relief medication.

The control group had no significant change in any parameter.

Feedback

Common feedback after having hundreds of people experience this approach to better breathing, is that it is simple, comprehensive and makes good sense; it is easy to apply into busy lives, and for many, it alerts them to misinformation about breathing and critical mistakes they were making for many years.
